I have a sore head from banging a brick wall, coul

Hi I have a brickwall and have been pulling my hair out with it for several years. Here is the information given on the 1851 census for Egremont in Cumberland. Elizabeth Roney 27 Wife Ireland James Roney 26 Head Ireland Joshua Roney 7 mo Son Egremont, Cul Leticia Roney 11 Daughter Ireland Rosannah Roney 7 Daughter Egremont, Cul Sarah J Roney 5 Daughter Egremont, Cul If I follow the dates of the census, then they came over from somewhere in Ireland between 1850 and 1854. James and Elizabeth died in 1880 and 1878 respectively and were buried in a CofE cemetery. IGI Records give the marriage of James and Elizabeth as being in somewhere in Cumberland on 11th October 1853. The difference in their ages varies from James being one year to ten years younger. If the date of the marriage is correct it would mean thatt Leticia was illegitimate. A family member has said that Leticia's birth was legitimised in Jan 1927, if this did happen, what would the process be? The Rooney surname is more common than Smith and Jones is over here so finding out where in Ireland they came from is more or less impossible. Could someone please suggest where I go next ...... only polite answers please. Regard Half Pint

half pint, you say the marriage was in 1853, then that would make all the children illegitamate!? Did you mean 43? I have the same problem getting over to Ireland. I was told that if your couple had any children born in 1855 then the county in Ireland the parents were born would be there. I know its not much to go on is it. I was nudged a thread on how to search for irish on IGI, i've nudged it for you. Sorry im not much help, but im only new! (1 month in!)

Half Pint, that census info is from 1861 not 1851. I'll repost it so that it's easier to read: Name: James Roney Age: 26 Estimated birth year: abt 1835 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Elizabeth Gender: Male Where born: Ireland Civil parish: Egremont Ecclesiastical parish: Egremont County/Island: Cumberland Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Whitehaven Sub-registration district: Egremont ED, institution, or vessel: 6g Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 70 Household Members: Name Age Elizabeth Roney 27 James Roney 26 Joshua Roney 7 Mo Leticia Roney 11 Rosannah Roney 7 Sarah J Roney 5

That marriage on the IGI is a member submission so could be completely wrong. Have you found the corresponding entries on the GRO indexes? As you say yourself, Rooney is a common name so even if the marriage date is correct, how can you be sure that it is YOUR James Rooney - there is more than one James & Elizabeth Rooney in Cumbria? You need to get the birth cert of one of the children born in England to get Elizabeth's maiden name. Sam x

There is no marriage for James Rooney or Roney registered Q4 1853 so that entry on the IGI would seem to be wrong. Sam x
