thanks all, so much information so quickly. im working my way through all the suggestions at the moment. Hi heather The name of the road (also the surname of the family) is clifford street which is in W1 London we know they made boxes but unsure if they were matchbox or package the only link i have is an incomplete will with no dates as it is in poor condition and badly photocopied showing where the money went prior to it being either sold or handed on. My only hope in finding out whether my relatives either owned or worked as a cleaner is by finding out about the factory.

What is the name and what did the factory make? If your ancestor owned a factory it is likely he left a will. Bear in mind that relllies can exaggerate a bit and dont be disappointed if you find he was a foreman at a factory or something!

Does anything come up on the a2a website. If you get a result it will tell you where the records are held.

try the local archives...... in our area the archives are in the Central library. Most boroughs have archives.
