How to find 1871 census from a name of road?

I have a marriage certificate in 1872 that it was Michael Broaderick and Catherine de Grussa. They were in New Kent Road of St Mary Newington in the county of Surrey. Registration district is St Saviour. I am trying to find Catherine's family. So how do I find New Kent Road in 1871 census? What is a town for this? Or do some censuses in Surrey miss out? Thanks, Steven from Australia.

Hi Jeanette and June, thanks for the 1861 census. However, I already have this 1861, 1851 of Ambrose and also from 1881 and 1891. However, Ambrose is miss out in 1901 before his death in 1906.

Also I have Ambrose's wife Catherine's death certificate that she died in 1872. Their address was 5 Portland Place, Arch Street, Newington so how do I find that address in 1871 census? It was St Saviour, Surrey. Sub-district was Trinity Newington.

It is possible to do an address search of the 1871 census on Findmypast - you will need to buy some credits or find some kind soul who will do a look up for you.

Did try an address search on 1871 census - can find the road no problem on findmypast but unfortunately the properties were not numbered. Maureen

Hi Steven, I found 5 Portland Place, Arch Street, Newington in the 1871 census, but unfortunately the people living there aren't the de Grussa family. At least part of New Kent Road is also in the same district (ED 11), but I couldn't see Catherine or Michael. The ref for 5 Portland Place is RG10 Piece 611 Folio 102 Page 12: Name: Sophia Nichelson Age: 48 Estimated birth year: abt 1823 Relation: Head Gender: Female Where born: Southampton, Hampshire, England Civil parish: St Mary Newington Ecclesiastical parish: Trinity County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: St Saviour Southwark Sub-registration district: Trinity Newington ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Household schedule number: 80 Household Members: Name Age Edwin Nichelson 12 Sophia Nichelson 48

Hi Elaine, I never thought about Findmypast. Thanks for telling me. However, I don’t have any credits so did check it but no numbers of houses. Hi Glitter, yes, I agreed with you that there were not numbered. Hi Gwynne, I did not know about NA websites censuses. I never check it. Thanks for reference RG/621, RG/622 and RG/623. HI Christine, many thanks for your time to find them. How did you find them? I will try with New Kent Road. Cheers, Steven.

Hi Steven, It's a bit long-winded, but first I did an address search for Arch Street, Newington on the findmypast website, which told me that the Civil Parish was St Mary Newington (searching the census index is free). Then I went to Ancestry and brought up the 1871 census search form. Scrolling down on this page, you'll see a list of counties at the bottom. I clicked on London, which then gives you a list of civil parishes. Clicking on St Mary Newington gives you a choice of 3 sub-registration districts, one of which is Trinity Newington, which you'd already said was the sub-district in which Catherine had died in 1872. Selecting Trinity Newington opens the page on which all the Enumeration Districts are listed for that sub-district. It was just a matter of clicking on each link to view the description of each enumeration district, and ED 11 listed Portland Place. Click on the District 11 link and you have a series of census images to scan through, which doesn't take too long if you have a fast connection. As I said, a bit long-winded, but you get there in the end! :-)
