Help with BMD search results

I've ran a birth search for my Great great grandfather on the BMD section of the 1901 census site. The results only give the quarter of the year he was born, where it was registred and a volume and page number. What does the volume and page number refer to?! I'm new to this and am not sure what to do with this information! Thanks to anyone who can help...

The volume and page number refer to the GRO indexing system and are the numbers you quote when ordering a cert from the GRO. The volume number identifies the registration district, which is a geographical area, rather than a specific place. The returns are sent in quarterly, so without buying the cert, you will not be able to find out exact date of birth. Jay
