I have received a marriage certificate today, the marriage was solemnized at the Abbey Chapel, Romsey, Hampshire in 1857, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Independents. I have looked up the officiating minister on the 1861 census & his occupation was ‘Independent Minister of the Abbey Chapel’. May be a silly question, but what religion would the Independents have been? Thanks for any help. Angela

Hi Angela, Independent Ministers were Protestant. The Congregational Church is a predecessor of the United Reformed Church- therefore nearly Methodist!! I believe Romsey Abbey is Church of England - protestant, but considered 'High' church. (in other words nearly Catholic!!) So, the Chapel within the Abbey could have been/be Congregational. Romsey Abbey has a strange history that may have allowed various denominations of Protestantism within it's walls. See: http://www.romseyabbey.org.uk/history_of_romsey_abbey.htm maggie

Maggie Thanks for your reply. Sorry to be dim, but are these anything to do with Methodists, as I know some of the family were Methodist going forward? Do you know if the Abbey chapel was separate from the Abbey? Btw, we come up your way often, our younger son lives in Alresford. Angela ps sorry, your additional message crossed!

Maggie On the A386 - my hubby used to go through there on the way to work in Plymouth. How long since you left? We've only been living here for 3 years & have since discovered I have a lot of roots in Hampshire. My son lives there coincidentally, we used to live just south of London. Angela
