I am having great difficulty in how to proceed. My great grandads grandmother is Elizabeth Hickman born in 1834 and died in 1925. She was married to Thomas Reavall of Oxton. Her brother James was sent to Australia in 1847. I have the information that Elizabeths Great uncle was Sir Neville George Hickman of Gainsborough & Thonark. The problem i'm having is finding Elizabeths parents. I have tried the census records, numerous websites, I have written to Gainsborough Hall, etc... to no avail. It would able me to connect Elizabeth and Sir Neville properly on my tree. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank-you for your time and help. Steph |

Whether you connect these people on your tree is your choice.......personally, I would wait till I had documentary proof, but you could add notes stating that it was conjecture......... Reg |

Thank-you both, I will try to make something of your leads. I did think that she may have been ilegitimate, which might explain the lack of information. This is definitely something to go on anyway. |

Have you got her marriage cert? If not, you need it, to establish accurately the name and occupation of her father. You may then be able to find his ancestry, and prove - or disprove - the rumour. Reg |

I think there is written proof as my Great Grandfather proved it to Gainsborough Hall, but sadly he is no longer around and I don't know where the documents are. Thank-you |

I see on the IGI Neville George Hickman was baptised in Gainsborough on 8 Oct 1725, one of three children of Nevil and Frances Hickman (the other two being girls). If this is the chap you refer to he seems far too old to be Elizabeth's great uncle, though of course there could still be a more distant relationship. |

Stephanie I don't want to be a big wet blanket - but MY great grandfather proved that we were descended from William the Conqueror. Unfortunately, my research does not tally with his, on account of there being no records before 1187 for this family. And a few other minor details, like him following the wrong line...... OC |

It does sound like him. The birth date I have though for Sir Neville George Hickman is 1727. He does seem a bit old, with there being 99 years separating them. His sisters could be much younger though and be Elizabeths Great Grandmother? My great Aunt is stll alive and there are 76 years separating us! Thank-you for your help, this is all very much appreciated. |

OC - thats ok! all things have to be considered! I have a feeling I might be on the right line because I have an old letter from James Hickmans Great grand daughter over in Australia, who traced to Gainsborough Hall as well. Also, a paper covered the story as well after researching that my great grandads grandmother was Elizabeth Hickman, niece of Sir Neville. I just wish I had the paperwork they all had! |
