If someone joined the army in 1894 - 1895 would they still appear on the 1901 census? If not, is there anywhere else that i can look to find where they were at the time of the census? Julie |

Dont forget that a lot of military personnel were engaged in fighting the Boer war in 1901, so may not appear on census returns. |

Hello Julie. This is another Keith (May). If he was in England he would be on the census - if he was in South Africa he wouldn't. Do you know how long he served? He may well have been in WW1 in which case you could look for his medal card. What have you got on him? Regards Keith |

Hi Keith, well here goes!!! I don't know very much apart from he died in Brighton 1955, He never married but lived as common law husband to my G Grandmother, ( he is my Great Grandfather) He apparentlyjoined the army at the age of 14... according to his death cert he was 75 at the age of death. I cannot find a birth for him. I know he was in India at one stage as he was shot in the foot which on his return home caused him to lose his leg. He then worked in Brighton , untill he retired at the age of 72. That is about all i know. His name was John W Sparrow Preston, However i have ommited the Sparrow and think i have found his medal cards on the national archives, as i also know that he was a sergeant major in the army.
