Local newspapers are your best bet. Yes, he would have been sent to porison in the 1940s - but probably only for a year or so, it depends on WHY he committed bigamy - if it was purely for financial gain, he would probably have got longer. The bigamous marriage cert might provide clues - it should be suppressed in the index, because, legally, no marriage took place. This all depends on whether the Registrar was TOLD of the bigamous marriage, by the Courts, of course. Even though a bigamous marriage meant that no marriage had taken place, legally, both partners to a bigamous marriage had to get a Declaration of nullity before they could remarry. These are kept in the Divorce Court Registers under Annulments. OC

Carol I doubt it because we were in the middle of WW2 although in those days you never know, have you tried googling for info? Georgina.

Hi do you know if a bigamist was found out in the 1940s would he have been sent to prison? is there any were that you can find this out thanks
