Seaman and oysterdredger??

On my gg grandfathers marriage certificates he has stated his fathers occupation as 'mariner' on one and 'merchant seaman' on the other. I'm having trouble with this because I know his father was an oyster dredger. My husband assures me that they are totally different. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks |

I dont think its a problem, surely oyster dredging would be seasonal work? I have lightermen entered as mariners on children's baptism records - perhaps it was just easier to say that - to most people someone employed on a boat would be a mariner. And anyway, it may be the chap was an oyster dredger on census but at the time of the marriage was a merchant seaman. I always think its strange how we expect them to have the same job over 40 or 50 years and not take into account the seasons and the local economics and their physical changes. |

Thanks for that. The problem I have is that I also have some birth certs and marriage certs for other members of his family and they all have oyster dredger for the fathers occupation. I can't find his birth certificate to confirm I have the right person so I just want some 'proof'! |

Give us some details - or was he pre 1837? Where is this, England? Have a google about oyster dredging - see if it was seasonal work which may account for the change on the various certs - depending on which time of year they were written? |

He was born in 1853/4 but I've gone through the BMD records and ordered 5 certs and they all came back wrong. They had 11 kids so maybe she didn't get time to register them all. Anyway I'll google oyster dredger and see what I think. Many thanks for your help Heather |

Start a new thread giving all the info on him - I bet some of the super sleuths on here have a good chance of finding him. Good luck. I would add I had one family where the kids birth certs all showed dad as an upholsterer and my GGMx2 marriage cert showed him as a post carrier. That threw me a bit but luckily an unusual name and GGMX2 occupation was upholsterer so it made sense. I guess the guy may have lost some of his physical abilities for the job - eye sight failing, perhaps arthritis in his hands and took the other job or it may be a post carrier at that time when the service had only just started was a step up from manual work. |
