No. First child born the year after marriage. I guess it must be a different couple then. Strange though! Thank you for your help. Jodi x

I do have an 1871 scotland census for Thomas Docherty, although it's not confirmed.

Jodi if you have their marriage certificate & confirmation of their ages on the 1901 census then I think it is highly unlikely they were parents aged 10 & 12. Was any of the children on the 1901 census born before their marriage? Georgina.

I've only got their marriage cert. 1885. Haven't been able to find them before that. Is it common for that to happen? It just seemed strange that they would have the same surnames?

Jodi I have looked at the births you mention & they seem to have been taken from extracted records but they probably refer to a different couple with the same names. Have you checked the census's in scotland to see when your couple first appear? Georgina.

I think you have come across a 'submitted' record on the IGI. These are not checked by anyone, and anyone can submit any information, true or false. I have never heard of parents as young as 10 and 12 and my tree goes back to 1554 on one branch. It is remotely possible, I suppose, but I have never come across it. My youngest mother is 13 and my youngest father 16. I would ignore the entry and do things the 'proper' way - find the births and/or baptisms yourself, that way you will know it is correct. OC

Im looking for the children of Thomas Docherty and Margaret Carrigan. All was going well until I had a little look at IGI, my first time there. However, when I typed in their names, it came up with two children: John Doherty b. 22/02/1877 in Antrim, Antrim, Ireland. Denis Doherty b. 8/04/1879 in Belfast, Antrim Ireland. Parents: Thomas Doherty Margaret Doherty Carrigan Thomas and Margaret are both from Ireland, as stated in the 1901 census on scotlands people, where they are registered with 8 children, one called John b. approx. 1888, but no Denis. The problem is, I have their wedding cert., registered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1885 with Thomas being 21 and Margaret 18, which would make them just 12 and 10 when they had their first child!?? Could it all be just a coincidence or a typo? I've heard that IGI shouldn't be trusted all that much. If these are the right children, what happened to them? Any replies much appriciated and welcome. I'm quite new to all this! Thank you x
