Florence Smith was born 20/8/1882 Tamworth, Staffordshire. Father's name Thomas(carpenter). Mother's name Mary Elizabeth nee Wright(dressmaker). Thomas and Mary married Sept 1880 6d 417. Mary appears in 1881 census(taken on 3rd April) living on her own in Tamworth(No sign of Thomas). Mary must have fallen pregnant in Dec 1881 to have Florence in Aug 1882. I'm assuming that Thomas was on the scene in Dec if he is Florence's father. There is a death index for a Thomas Smith in Dec 1881 Walsall 6b 378. I know that Mary marries Henry Unsworth Apr 1887 6d 391. I have not been able to place Mary and Thomas together from the time they married and Mary's second marriage to Henry. I have to assume that Thomas died shortly after Mary fell pregnant with Florence(although it's cutting it fine). Does anyone have another plausible theory that I can work with? |

Does the age of Thomas dying in Walsall R.D. age 26 match the age of your Thomas at marriage? Can you find a Thomas of this age in 1881, who disappears by 1891? Maybe a baptism entry for Florence would mention if her father was dead. Gwyn |

He could have been working away from home on the night of the census, is he anywhere else as a married man without a wife!!! Although you can't be sure its him it could be an explaination. I have a similar one where the wife and children are in one area with her as head and married and he's in another area as a lodger and married. The family in the next census have moved to the area he was in so I have assumed he moved first and the they followed. Helena |

In 1881 census, both Mary and prisoner Thomas are listed married. |

The only one I've been able to find who might fit the bill is: 1881 census Thomas Smith (prisoner) b 1855 Coleshill, Warwickshire. I can't find him in 1891 or 1901. |

The Thomas Smith 1855 Coleshill prisoner isnt a carpenter hes a labourer. You really need to know his age from his marriage cert. Then you can find his death using his age as a guide Margaret |

I'll send off for marriage cert as this will give me Thomas' age and also his father's name and occupation. Knowing my luck, he'll turn out to be a Thomas Smith too..lol I'd like to see Florence's baptism record, but I'm not sure if she was baptised. Because I'm in Australia, it's a little difficult to check this out. |
