Desperately seeking Andrew!

Fox On The Rocks Report 4 Feb 2007 19:55

Ive been trying to find the father of Thomas Docherty. I have him on his son's marriage cert. as Andrew Docherty dec. (Marriage of Thomas Docherty to Margaret Carrigan March 6th 1885) Andrew's wife's name is Briget, but cant quite read her maiden name. Looks a litte like wynn or Hynn. Looking on the 1871 census, I can find a bridget Docherty with a son called Thomas, right age, right area (i think. My tree seems to be hovering in a road called cowgate, Edinburgh). However, Andrew is down as Anthony. I don't want to assume that they are one and the same person, although, searching through Anthony and Brigets other children on the census, I found a birth cert. and Brigets maiden name on there, although also hard to read, looks like it could be the same as on Thomas' marriage cert. Is it possible for first names to vary like this? Please help, this is my first lead on Andrew for months!!

Census can be mis transcribed or the enumerator could have heard the name wrong in the first place. Do you know of any brothers/sisters for Andrew? Any born around the time of the census that could narrow the area? Cowgate is a main street in Edinburgh's Old Town and the area round about is known as the Cowgate. Mhairi

Or the name on the marriage cert could be wrong or the clerk mis heard the name.
