Our family have a lot of photographs of family members approx 70-100, mostly we dont know who they are as they dont have a name on them and all older generations whom may of been able to give as a clue have passed on. Some photos say taken 1901 etc, I am assuming most were taken 1870-1920s, a lot have the photography studio on the back and give a number. Would any of these studio's still exist? Where would the files of the studios got to if not? Am wondering if studios would have any more info on the people in the photos? Any assistance re photos gladly received. Thanks in advance Joanna

That is definitly a good idea but at the moment I dont have the technology to scan them in and paste them on that board. Which is why I was hoping that studios might still have old files. Joanna

If the photographs you have are from the UK it can be possible to gat an idea of the age of the pictures by checking the Historical Directories website for the photographer. If you have access to the census for the locations where the photographers were working you may be able to locate them in the census. This will give an approximate working period. As some of your pictures have reference numbers on the reverse, the lower the number the earlier in the working period of the photographer. There are several useful sites for dating old photographs based on the style of the card mount, the pose and the clothing. Roger Vaughan has several websites with examples of victorian photographs which are dated. There is also a list of some photographers giving approximate date of working. This will get you to one of his sites. http://www.cartes.freeuk*com/time/date.htm

Peter Thank you very much for that info, I am googling all the photpgraphic studios, but the cenus idea is great and thanks for the website will have a good look. Most of the numbers is in the 2000 old so must be quite late in years, although would not know how many photos would be taken a year. Just got so many photographs to go through. Joanna
