In the 1871 census, Mary Whitbread is shown as being born in Canning Town. In the 1881 census a Mary Whitbread is shown as 'Childrens maid, domestic servant'....place of birth, Poplar Poplar and Canning Town are next to each other, and I can only find this Mary Whitbread in the 1881 census, and the age looks ok. Can I 'assume', the 1881 Mary is the one I want????? Kathlyn

I would say that you can assume they're one and the same. I have found in my research that when someone is a servant in a household, it's usually someone else that gives the info to the census taker and they don't always know the exact place of birth. Margaret

Oops, yes you're right, Sylvia! I broke the rule by suggesting assuming something. I'm slapping my wrist as I'm typing. Margaret

Ist rule of genealogy, never assume anything!!! You need to find her birth reg. her parents etc and be absolutely sure. Otherwise you could spend weeks or months following the wrong person. Sylvia.

But when a person is living and working away from the rest of the family, how can I tie them together? Kathlyn

Check the birth indexes to see if there are two Marys, one born Poplar and one born Canning town. (Use a 5 year time span as well)
