There's a chance that he didn't actually marry Sarah but they told the census enumerator that they were husband and wife.

Possibly the daughter's birth....the cert would at least tell you Sarah's birth surname Name: Emma Foot Year of Registration: 1877 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Biggleswade County: Bedfordshire Volume: 3b Page: 395 And the son......... Name: William Foot Year of Registration: 1879 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Biggleswade County: Bedfordshire Volume: 3b Page: 352 Reg

I agree that people would tell the enumerator that they were married, even if they were not, but what about a child's birth certificate. My g.gran has put her name as MW (W being the name of her supposedly 2nd husband), then underneath a comment about her being originally MC,(her maiden name) and lately MA (A being the surname of her 1st husband). Would they tell lies even on birth certificates? Also her death certificate has the informant as GW widower of deceased. However, I still cannot find any marriage details for them. Thanks to Cheryl (who I contacted via the Records Office page), who found my g.gran on the 1881 census listed as a widow, with her surname spelt wrong, (how Cheryl found her in one evening I don't know I have been searching through all combinations of the name for about a year as has another descendant of hers from the 1st marriage). I already knew her 1st husband had died 1877/8 because of a birth certificate of her 4th child, but was interested to note that her 2nd husband was not at the address, at least on the census day. Ah well, no doubt all will be revealed sooner or later - probably later.

Which images have you viewed? Have you checked the years between - and after - the births of the children? Reg

There are 2 James Foot deaths in Biggleswade, before this second marriage, which could be the father.

Thanks to all for your replies Yes, I did know that James and Elizabeth were the parents and that James (father) had Died Also aware that people did say they were married, but not When I suggested this to my wife whose family this is, was met with OH! NO NO NO NO I have checked during and after the births of children. So I think, Reggie, I will go for the birth cert. of Emma in the hope Sarah's maiden name will get me to a marriage thanks all.
