Hi Folks Having a senior moment. I found the thread I'm looking for last night and again this morning, but now it seems to have disappeared. There is a thread somewhere suggesting that if (on Ancestry) you just put in the name of a village for a particular census, all the inhabitants of that village will come up. What I am looking for is somewhere in all the comments there is one from someone who said their list came up without names, but that she 'clicked' something and the names appeared. Whoever you are, what did you click? Thanks Liz |

Here is the gist of it all: On Ancestry when searching the censuses try this: If you have a small village or town, just bring up a year of census and then enter nothing except the village name - the whole village comes up in alphabetical order - its fun seeing the same old names who interbred with your lot. Fascinating stuff. If you put it in the Keywords you'll also get people that were born there but moved away. Have just tried this - brilliant! Have never been able to trace my ancestor Thomas Sainsbury in 1841. Using this method I have found him listed as Thomas Saingbury This is fantastic, I am sure that as my rellies came from a small village, others with the same name could well be related. Can anyone tell me if there is a method of scaning through the pages quickly? There were 15,344 people registered in an area I was looking at and the name I wanted started with a W. Even skipping 5 pages at a time took a long time. If you're using the ancestry advanced scanner you can put a page number in - might take a bit of trial and error but you should get there fairly quickly This also works with place of birth - which is a boon if they don't live where you expect them to be and their name's have been mistranscribed. Oh yeah, and if they keep changing their dates of birth!!! Let's hope they just get this one thing right then eh? LOL So, to summarise; Bring up the year in question Put no other details apart from place of birth and away you go ... everyone listed alphabetically through all the years. |

We all do it a different way. From homepage scroll down uk census collection enter village (nothing else) Sometimes nothing comes up and you need to know parish. Here is a test Enter raddington as parish This is all residents 126 1841 England Census 120 1851 England Census 121 1861 England Census 104 1871 England Census 102 1881 England Census 86 1891 England Census 89 1901 England Census You can now do all sorts of things Enter head in keyword This is all households 20 1851 England Census 21 1861 England Census 18 1871 England Census 17 1881 England Census 14 1891 England Census 15 1901 England Census now add john in first name This is all households with John as head 6 1851 England Census 6 1861 England Census 5 1871 England Census 4 1881 England Census 2 1891 England Census 2 1901 England Census You can play for hours Find all males or females Find all people born in a timeframe etc etc |

Thanks - I keep reading 'nudge' but haven't a clue what you are all talking about. The bit I was really looking for was what to do if when you have put in the village name, a list comes up without names. I definitely remember someone making a comment about that. Liz |

Choose which census you want to search. Type in village name under Residence. An alphabetical list of all the people in that village on that census comes up. Very useful I have found. Chris |

Liz I think this is the particular comment you meant; Added by Maggie Across the Pond on 31/01/2007 18:40:48 Omigosh! I just did this and entered West Ham (not exactly a village, but...) I got pages and pages but they have not put the names, it is blank. When I click on View the names come up. I could be here a looong time with the 128,390 entries they are showing!!! LOL! UPDATE TO THIS; Just realised that all the addresses show the house is 'Uninhabited' yet they list the people there. I wonder what that means? Good Luck, Jo |
