I am stuck and dont know what to do! I am trying to trace the Hogan family, I know my grandfather was John Hogan born in Liverpool 1878 and died 1949. He married in 1913 and according to his marriage certificate his father was Michael Hogan who was a market porter. I do not know his mothers name possibly Ellen. I have looked at the census to find Michael Hogan and their are 2 possibilities both are married to a Ellen. How can I find out which one is the one I am looing for??? I have tried to obtain my grandfathers birth certificate to determine his parents but on 2 occasions I have had my request for the certifcate returned due to lack of information even though I know the date of birth. I dont know what to do next??? It is driving me potty. Anne-Marie

Anne-Marie, What was his date of birth? I don't understand why they wouldn't send a cert. All you need is the name and the GRO reference. In 1881 there is one in Birkenhead and one in Liverpool. Rose

No John Hogan registered in Liverpool in the first quarter of 1878. The closest would be this one, in Birkenhead: Births Mar 1878 HOGAN John Birkenhead 8a 510 You need to quote the above ref when you order the cert from the GRO. Where did you get his birth date and location from? Richard

Anne Marie, If your are chasing an Irish family try under the name Eileen. Ellen and Eileen are often pet names for each other. The Irish never seemed to use the names on the birth cert! I should know. Jacquie
