I need someone's advise about where I might find the names of my ancestor's parents. Early 1800's in Devon - I know surnames and dates and roughly where but not sure how to confirm facts. Have had little luck so far. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. Can you help? Josephine.

To identify the parents of ancestors who are born before 1837 you will probably need to rely on entries in parish records for baptisms. If you can establish the place of birth for an ancestor from the censuses (1851 or later) this will help. Did any of these ancestors marry after 1837, if so you can at least get the name of the father and his occupation. There are several really helpful OPC (online parish clerks) who have access to a wealth of information about some Devon parishes. The first online resource is the Devon pages on GENUKI. Probably the best served county in my experience. If you have connections to Plymouth and know names etc the Devon FHS have produced some baptism, marriage and burial transcripts for the parishes in and around Plymouth. Baptisms 1813-1837 are included. These are the years which are not on the IGI. The marriages are 1754- 1837. Send me a PM if you need a name checking in these.records. Again, if you have Plymouthians, there are a couple of trade directories available online for the pre-1840's. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb*com/~terryw/#plymouth_directories Sadly, coverage of Devon parishes in the IGI is sparse. If you have ancestors from the South Hams there are some excellent pages of data, you can get links to them via the GENUKI website. Pete

Hi Josephine Sorry if you know this already, but have you tried putting the details in to www[.]familysearch[.]org? [Please remove square brackets] Because you know you're looking for Devon, it may be worth going for the International Genealogical Index, as that allows you to specify a county. If you've already done that and want confirmation of what you've found, it's worth seeing if the local Family History Society have transcribed the Parish Records and you can buy them on microfiche or CD or pay them to check them; the County Record Office may be able to do this otherwise. If the events took place on or after 1st July 1837, they may have been registered under Civil Registration, and you can check Freebmd (google for the full address) or the full records - there are various sites or someone can do a lookup - I can help if you send me a message! Sorry if all this is stuff you already know, and very best wishes with your research Lysianne
