I am planning a trip to follow in my ancestors footsteps, and would like to know if there are still houses in Ronald St, Glasgow. Also in Govanhill st, Glasgow. These houses were standing in 1880. Also does anybody know if Murrey Place, Uddingston, Bothwell, Lanark was once a hospital (1880) I am not familiar with this area, Jane

The site postcodefinder(.)co(.)uk you can put street names into which will help to find out if they are still there. A lot of the streets in Glasgow have been renamed. I have found a website that gave the new names but can't find the web address, if I find it I'll post it later. Teresa

Hi My grandfather was a Glasgow tram motorman and I've just found Ronald Street in his street guide. However, it looks as though it has been swept away by redevelopment in that part of the city. Govanhill Street is still there, or rather parts of it are. There's a Murray Path in Uddingston. If you are interested in an old online street map of Glasgow then let me know and I'll dig one up. Thankyou Denis for your help, I have found a Ronald St in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, its by Stewart St, I was hoping this would be the correct street however it sounds as though its not correct from what you have just told me. Any help re maps etc you can give me is greatly appreciated as my Gt Grandfather died here and I hope to find the nearest Church to this street and eventually try and find his grave. Also my Grandfather was born in Govanhill St so once again I am looking for the nearest Church for his christening. Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply.Regards Jane

Hi Jane, I am actually from Uddingston (Bothwell is a seperate village but just a mile separates them). I have heard of Murray Place but I can certainly check this out for you. I can also help with any other queries you may have on the area. Kind regards Lynne

Hey Jane If you've got time try and make a trip to the Mitchell library in Glasgow it houses a lot of information including some burial records. They also hold the poor records/parish relief for Glasgow and the surrounding area which are a great source of information and i believe the indexs are surname searchable. Even if you dont expect to find anyone on here still take a look, sks found my grt grt grt grandfather of their even though he made something of himself later on in life. Have fun on your trip Mhairi

Hi Jane The map link is: http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/scottishhistory Look for a heading called NLS Resources and you will find the map you need there. There are navigation and zoom facilities. Significant areas of the city have been comprehensively redeveloped since the last war and so some would be quite unrecognisable to your ancestors. If you go to where Ronald Street was then make a point of visting the Cathedral. Govanhill has not been affected as much a some localities, although it is now one of the most cosmopolitan parts of the city. As regards churches many have disappeared during redevelopment or have been converted into flats. It will help if you know the religion of the persons concerned, bearing in mind that in Scotland the 'Established Church' is the Church of Scotland. Google for GENUKI Scotland, and also the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. Denis.

Thankyou Avril have been on that site but will go on again and have another look round. I am due to stay at the heritage centre in New lanark, have been there before but had no idea that my Gt Grandparents had lived so close to there until I began my family tree, although I knew they all came from Scotland. my daughter always used to say she had 'Come Home' when we stayed there we never realised they had once been so close. Thankyou for taking the time to answer my thread, I have had so much help from people on here now and in the last few months. It restores your faith in human nature.
