Welcome to Tower Hamlets Births, Deaths & Marriages These indices refer to all the districts under the Tower Hamlets' umbrella from 1837 to date. See the list of districts and sub districts. The births have the most completed indices followed by the marriages, as these are requested more often. The death registers have not been indexed to the same degree. All the years covered by the site are constantly being updated, and with each register containing 500 entries, as many as 8,000 entries may be added each month. You will be able to search the index by name and year, so that you may request a certificate from the Register Office. At the moment we will only accept postal applications (forms to be downloaded) accompanied by a cheque or postal order. It is hoped that we will be able to take orders over the telephone shortly. You may however request a check on the entry prior to purchase by using the contact us option. See Hints and Tips. It should be noted that the marriage registers of Holy Trinity Church Minories (Our ref. is C49) are no longer held by this office. You will have to either contact Islington Register Office or GRO. Whilst every effort is made to ensure accuracy, there will be times when errors occur. We look forward to hearing from you and assure you of our commitment to deal with your request with efficiency and expediency. Certificates cost: £7.00 plus Postage UK £1.00 / Overseas £1.00

Would certificates ordered from here be different to those available from GRO? Sue

Different? They will contain the same info for a registration. The big plus is the search facility rather than the ordering facility - its a pound more than GRO.

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear (it's a bit early for me) I meant would they be scans of the original certificate or what you get from GRO. I've only ever ordered from GRO but understand that going through register offices sometimes produces certificates with ancestors signatures etc. Sue

Well I dont know - I think the last one I got from Tower Hamlets which was an 1840 birth was actually (disappointingly) hand written in a modern hand. Possibly because it was too poor to copy it. The only way you will see an original is to look in the actual register. If you have a Tower Hamlets bmd, you can always ring them, they have always been very helpful to me in the past. Long before ancestry brought out the 1851 for us, Tower Hamlets were beavering away doing the local area census transcripts and when I was searching for my GGFX2, they actually emailed me when they had found him in the 1851! Hows that for service? And they didnt charge for the details.

I wish it gave a wider time span - to be fair they do say its an on going project. I spent ages when I first started this looking for my GGF's birth 1840 in Stepney and no joy - decided he wasnt registered and then went for one of the siblings certs. Ive just entered his name on the Tower Hamlets bmd and he has come up with a mispelt name! Horstad instead of Horstead. So I guess had this index been around then at least Id have found him!

Heather, I think this will be a good site, when they iron out the early kinks i spoke to a lady at tower hamlets, she said the amount of records that has to be transfered from micro to computer is unbelievable, and there will be errors, But i dont think i would trust the information on line just at the moment,I have a draw of unreturnable certificates. Keep up the good work Ken
