Hi there, I am going insane trying to find a marriage between my gt grandmother FLORENCE SAVILL & grandfather X CHAPMAN. I have searched every combination in the FreeBMD and come up with nothing. Is there somewhere else I can search? I have got my grandfathers birth cert which shows his mother's name as FLORENCE CHAPMAN, formerly SAVILL so I am assuming they did get married as her name is the same as his I seem to remember reading on here that there is somewhere I can search that I pay for which is more in depth? Many thanks

Question......roughly when? And where? Can I point out that because whoever registered the child's birth said Florence was Mrs Chapman, it doesn't necessarily mean that she was.........the registrar would be unlikely to query the info, unless he knew the family personally. Have you located Florence as Miss Savill on any census prior to the 'marriage'? Reg

FreeBMD isn't complete so it is possible that the marriage you are looking for hasn't been transcribed yet. You can search the full marriage indexes for free on Ancestry. Sam x

If you have your grandfather's birth certificate his father's name should be on there. If not, then he was probably born out of wedlock. Rose

Thanks for your replies. I have no information other than what is on my grandfathers birth cert so very little to go on, his father's name is on there CHAPMAN, JAMES THOMAS (although on my grandfathers marraige cert says CHAPMAN, WILLIAM THOMAS as father so not sure which one is correct) and I have no idea when/where Florence was born. Perhaps they didn't marry. Thanks again

Louise, You wrote 'X CHAPMAN' so I assumed no father was listed. When and where was this? Would help to know what time period and area. Rose

Louise If you would like people to try to help, you will need to tell us where and when............ You don't give any indication of whether any of these people appear on any census..........is that perhaps because the events to which you refer are post-1901? Reg

Sorry I am fairly new to this. My grandfather was born JAMES THOMAS CHAPMAN Dec 1912 in West Ham Birth cert says; father: JAMES THOMAS CHAPMAN mother; FLORENCE CHAPMAN, formerly SAVILL. However on grandfathers marraige cert says father WILLIAM THOMAS CHAPMAN (deceased) So I am unsure as which one has error in fathers name, apparently his father died around 1915ish at sea so if he never knew his father perhaps marraige cert wrong.

The pay to view one you mean is I think familyrelatives.org and its name, time span and area searchable for the period 1866-1920. If you do use it only use ONE first name otherwise it seems to glitch. The results will come up showing second names.

If you have searched only on freebmd, that may be the problem. The FULL records are on Ancestry.....free, and have to be viewed quarter by quarter......... Use this address (minus the brackets) and register with the site........... http://content.ancestry(.)co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8965&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0 This is the marriage index............. Reg

Did you grandfather have any siblings? Any idea when Florence died? Rose

Louise Report 1 Feb 2007 19:37

Hi Rose, He had a brother 'Bill' (presumably WILLIAM) who my mum thinks was older, but no idea when he was born. Also no idea when Florence died - she had another child in Aug 1915 EVELINE BIRMINGHAM in West Ham so was still alive then. Louise

OK. So something's not right. For Eveline's birth the mother's maiden name is listed as Chapman. Rose

Did you find a marriage for a Birmingham to a Chapman/Savill? Any idea on what Bill's surname was? Rose

Louise

Louise Report 1 Feb 2007 20:15

Hi Rose Bills surname was definately CHAPMAN. I have been unable to find any marriage between Florence Chapman/Savill and 'Jim Birmingham' who we know was Eveline's dad. Everything just seems to come to a dead end, there is just so little to go on....
