Hello. I've had an e-mail from Ancestry encouraging me to put info into my member tree in order to find links with other trees. I've done this on GR but not on Ancestry. Is it worth doing it on Ancestry too? And, if so, is there a way of copying my tree from my FTM CD onto Ancestry, cos I certainly can't be bothered to enter all the info again! |

Hi I quite like the Ancestry tree - it attaches census info to each person and makes checking back a bit quicker, although I do still print out census info just in case. It's also easier to share with family members. As to linking with other trees there is no automatic notification of a match as with GR -at least I've never had any (some would say that's a good thing!) but I have had contact from someone who had found a name match some how but that's all it was! You can upload a Gedcom file onto Ancestry and vice versa but you'd need to ask someone else how. But if you only want it for more links to other trees I don't think it's worth the effort! Hope this helps Sue |

Hi Karen I have my tree on Ancestry but have had no contact yet, although I have found matches but am still waiting for replies. It's easy to save your Gedcom, if you look down the left hand sid of the screen you will see the import/export tree. Click on this and export the gedcom to your computer, then go to Ancestry and upload the same Gedcom. regards Jo |

Well if you are looking to make connections with possible relatives, then the more places you have you tree, the better! To get your tree on Ancestry, export a GEDCOM from Family Tree Maker and save it somewhere. (File..Export... and then makesure you chose file format .GED) Open Ancestry, click on Family Trees, click the 'Upload A GEDCOM' and then click 'Start Your Tree'. You now have the option to browse to the file you saved earlier and it then uploads to Ancestry. No need to type all the info in again! Sam x |

Thanks very much for your help, folks. I am a complete computer ignoramus, but I will try following your hopefully idiotproof instructions & see what happens! |

I have been using the ancestry tree since it started. I found it useful to check my genes tree as it automatically searches for records which you can link. If any of your relatives are in one world tree it will let you see their ancestors. By each person you add is a button contact ancestry members interested in Jo Blogs and you can see who has looked at their census records or added them to their tree. I have been getting about as many contacts through ancestry as through genes but only for my little twigs. I particularly like the time line for each person. It still has a few bugs. If you add a burial date a box pops up to ask you if you realise the event was after death. Ancestry has a lot of American members so you may find a few strays who emigrated. |

I have my trees on ancestry as well as here (I broke them down on Ancestry into 8 branches), have had contact through ancestry from people who are not on here, one was my dad's cousin who sent the message saying this is my grandfathers name - I think I scared her when I aked if her mum was a certain person, we hadn't had contact with her for years and I quickly realised she didn't now my granparents had died. just export your tree from FTM or GR and import it onto ancestry, you can link the censys records direct to individuals that way and it means your net is cast out ferther than just GR. |

Hi Karen I've got my tree on Ancestry and have found it to be a really useful way of finding matches with other trees. For instance started doing OH's a few weeks ago - one name I put in the tree came up with a match going all the way back the the early 1600's. Couldn't believe my luck!! Mary |
