does anyone know what KCB (not KGB!) stands for?

Have a google for it - you can see pics aswell: So your bloke was a Knight! The Order of the Bath was founded in 1725. The Most Honourable And Ancient Order Of The Bath was presented for service of the highest calibre. The order has a civil and a military division with three levels in each division: Knight Grand Cross (GCB); Knight Commander (KCB - Medal Shown); and Companion (CB). The first two levels confer knighthood

Just wondering if anyone knows what these letters stand for after someone's name? Found it on 1871 census following someone's name - it may have something to do with civil service, I'm not sure. many thanks

Hi Lindy I would expect KCB to stand for 'Knight Commander of the Bath'. Barbra

Thanks Heather/Barbra - well, what can I say!? hadn't thought of googling it - needless to say I'm pretty sure he isn't related to me but I've been on a very interesting search last few days. Quite different to the ones I normally look at! Guess the best I can hope for is that one of mine is a servant somewhere along the line! Many thanks
