Does anyone know whether a census would've been taken in British colonies throughout the 19th century? For example, I'm looking for people born and living on St Helena in 1841 and 1851. Would a census have been taken there? Any information appreciated. Rich :-) |

Richard As far as I know, the census for british subjects applied only to those living in England Wales Scotland and Ireland. St Helena MAY have had census taken at various times, but not under the ONS system of census. Have you tried google? Although not the same place, I was amazed to find how much info there is on line for Turks and Caicos Islands, for instance, including records for the Church of England. OC |

Thanks OC Yes, I had a little Google. Apparently there was one on St Helena for 1814. After that, I just can't tell. I went to the FHC today and I've ordered two microfilms: baptisms for St Helena and civil registration marriages for St Helena. If the people I'm looking for aren't there then I'll cross the records off the list and search elsewhere. |
