Have received a death certificate today for GG Uncle, Samuel Joseph Winter died 13th Oct 1900 age 24 occupation Yeoman of signals R N HMS Vivid address 43 Beaumont Road Plymouth present at death Richard William Weale of same address. I have looked at the 1901 census and Richard Weale is a retired R N Steward and still living at the address with a wife and several children. Why would they be in London, HMS Vivid was a navel barracks now called HMS Drake, where would he have been buried, he was born and his family were still living in Swansea at that time, and can I get records of Guys hospital for that time. Any help much appreciated Thanks Pam |

Hi Pam, the London Metropolitan Archives holds admission records for Guys Hospital, you could check with them first to see if they have the dates you are interested in. |

What was the cause of death? Was it something that would mean he needed to be at Guy's rather than a more local hospital. Kath. x |

Morning, thanks for the info, the cause of death was 'Ruptured aneurysm of abdominal aorta, collapse' Don't think they would have much time to get from Plymouth to London, be then I'm not very medical. Thanks Pam |

This is interesting, and confusing! I live in Plymouth, reasonably close to HMS Drake etc, but I don't know why they'd be in London etc. Hmmmm Will look forward to seeing the answers to this one! |

I would assume that he and the informant were on a ship in London or at some Naval Establishment like Greenwich when he died. The Death entry has the registration district St Olave but what else on the certificate says Guy's Hospital? If he had died at sea then his death would be registered when the ship arrived at port. Strange! Keith |
