Hi I just wondered if there are any records that contain details of people who have changed their name by deed poll? Thanks Susan

A deed poll is a formal statement to prove that your name has been changed. For most people it will not be necessary to prepare a deed poll as evidence that they have changed their name. However, there may be cases when a deed poll is required. For example, some professional bodies require members to produce a deed poll as proof of any name change most just changed

I think that is what probably happened in this case. Thanks for helping. Susan

The document is only a solemn declaration that the person wishes to be known by another name, and contrary to popular belief, there is no central register of name changes in the United Kingdom. Deed Polls are not registered anywhere unless they are 'enrolled' i.e. lodged for safe keeping, in the Close Rolls of the Chancery (from 1851 to 1902) and from 1903, in the Enrolment Books of the Supreme Court of Judicature, which is located within the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand, London.

Hi My son was born whilst I was still married - but husband wasn't the father and I didn't want the baby to have my 'married' name, so I changed my surname to that of my lover's - by deed poll. I don't think the solicitor I used even sent me an invoice, let alone registered the change anywhere. It had the double whammy effect of not having to re-register the birth or even have lover present when registering the birth to put his name on the certificate! And it worked out too - son's now 12 and we've been married 10 years in August! Bridie
