Does anyone know if there is some sort of register to find out if my Gt Uncle qualified/registered as a dentist. On the 1881 he is a dentist assistant but by 1901 he calls himself a dentist and in other records is reffered to as George Swindell dentist. He came from a poor family and l cannot see how they could pay for his training, any ideas or info?, Lynne |

He may well be listed in the trade directories for the area. Try the historical directories website. |

I don't think all 'dentists' at that time were dentists as we know them today. For the vast majority of the population, an extraction would be the last resort, and I'm sorry to say this, but in villages, the blacksmith sometimes doubled up as dentist. If he came from a poor family, he might be like my 'vetinary surgeon', who was the son of a horse breaker/doctor. Guess it was a case of experience, rather than professional training. There probably were vets, but I'm pretty sure mine would have no proper qualifications and only called himself that. Jay |

Thanks everyone for the advice, l will try the BDA site, as to just calling yourself a dentist l think this is probably the answer, his father was a milkman so no connection there and no other members of the family in any way medical, apart from butchers! In later life he appeared much better off than the rest of the family so maybe even then dentists whether registered or not were paid handsomly! Lynne |
