How Do You Link A Birth To A Marriage?

Can anyone give me any tips on how to link a birth to a marriage?I am trying to trace my great grandfather, we have his death certificate and the certificates of his marriages but no fathers name is given. To complicate things several babies of the same name were born in the year we estimate he would have been born. How can we tell which of these is him when we have no mothers' name, fathers' name or even an idea of where he was born? Carol I just wanted to let everyone know that we have found the elusive Mr. Rose and to say thank you to everyone who gave me their help and suggestions. Thank you. Carol

might the census help? you'd need to know an area he was born in or siblings names though

Did he leave a will,(possible names of siblings might be quoted) Witness names on marriage certs might help, the location/address at the time of the marriage might help with a census return for either him or other family members. Baptism records might also help. What sort of date are you talking about.

if you give his name and the info you have perhaps someone can find a link for you. Witnesses at the wedding or finding him in the census may help. Irene

Thanks everyone for your interest. Right to start with his name was Frederick William Rose we estimate his birth to have been around the Sept quarter of 1878. We base this estimation on his age at the time of his marriages and at the time of his death. His first marriage took place in Dec 1898 when he was aged 20 and his death took place in June 1907 when he was aged 28. I think I have narrowed his birth down to one possible which is in the Sept quarter 1878 Sheffield 9c 559 but I have no idea how to tell if this certificate is the right one when it arrives. To further complicate things no fathers name is given on the marriage certs and his address is just the name of the village so we have no idea who his parents were or if he was even born in Yorkshire. If anyone could offer any assistance we would be very grateful. Carol

Had a reply last night. Quote:- Hi thanks for your interest. There is no fathers'' name given on the marriage cert for Frederick William Rose he was aged 20 his job was given as miner. The bride was Ada Johnson aged 19 her fathers name was Fred Johnson occupation joiner. The marriage was witnessed by Fred Johnson and Gertrude Johnson who I presume was the brides'' mother. I would be very grateful for any advice you could give. Regards Carol

Sorry Carol, I can't see a way to like this couple to Ada, nor can I see any Frederick / William and Ada Rose anywhere on the 1901. I've tried various spellings, wildcards and soundexes with no luck sorry

That would help us to find him in 1901. So far I haven't found a widowed Frederick Rose born around the right date.

This might be him in 1901: 1901 England Census about Frederick Rode Name: Frederick Rode Age: 22 Estimated birth year: abt 1879 Relation: Boarder Gender: Male Where born: Hogsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England Civil parish: Doncaster Ecclesiastical parish: Hexthorpe St Jude County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Doncaster Sub-registration district: Doncaster ED, institution, or vessel: 23 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 113 Household Members: Name Age Daniel Cart 53 Hannah S Cart 27 Frederick Rode 22 The transcription's wrong - his surname clearly reads Rose on the image. However, he's shown as single, and his occupation looks like carp. joiner.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Jan 2007 20:07

A Frederick W Rose (parents Francis and Eliza) and an Ada Johnson (parents Frederick and Mary Ann) both lived in Attercliffe cum Darnall, near Sheffield. However, that Frederick's shown as single in 1901, and his occupation in 1891 and 1901 is hatter's assistant, which is very different from a miner, so I assume this is the wrong person.
