Thank you Mhari and Orangeblossom I think I have found John in 1861 Liverpool age 9- nephew to the Donnell household RG9 2667 106 14- The name has been transcribed as Dault but it looks like Donnel to me- One witness on his son's marriage cert is a Donnell, coincidence maybe or family connection, or it may not even be my John, not sure yet. Thanks for the tips, can't believe I forgot to check IGI first! I'll go and have a hunt around. Thanks Simone x

Do you know if John is on the 1841 census? How old is he in 1851? Use those as your starting points as they are likely to be more accurate than the later ones.

Try using the igi first to narrow down the dates/area/father. The searches will not show the fathers occupation and you may not even get the fathers occuipation on the christening, alot of them do though. Scotlandspeople is a good site but can be a bit hit and miss sometimes especially when you have a common name. Any more info/help needed just let me know Mhairi

Hi I am just about to have a go at using Scotlands People site, never used it before, and I need some advice. I am looking for a birth of John Bruce b between 1835 - 1845 as listed on England census returns, father James an Engineer. If I do a search will it give father's occupation on the entries I find or will I have to view each entry separately and therefore use extra credits. What's the best way to do it? Any tips gratefully received. Thanks Simone
