Hi Laura, I am a member of the Leics group I just have the mags sent me as I live too far awsy to go to the talks. Also I am a member of the Lincs society and I attend the meetings once a month they are really interesting you get a magazine 4 times a year and it gives you surnames that people are researching, I think that costs £12 but go for it you will enjoy the meetings and the mags. OK, this may be a silly question, but how many of you do actually belong to your local FHS, or other FHS's of areas you are researching? If so, are they useful? Do you recommend joining? I feel I should probably join Devon and Cornwall due to the sheer volume of my research in these areas, but just wanted to see other people's thought s on it first... Laura x

I belong to the Kent Family History Society because I now live in Kent ,BUT my families came from SE London ,Essex Birmingham & Germany. It doesnt matter that I,m not researching in the local area because the wealth of Knowledge of the members is vast. some have been researching for twenty plus years and not all have familes that were only in the Kent areas. We meet monthly and have some really interesting guest speakers, plus they put on coaches to the FRC and Kew at a very reasonable cost and its almost door to door. I have been helped by them a lot and made a number of friends and its a good social outing once a month as well as the trips. it cost £8.50 per year and worth the money

I belong to two. One is the Bedfordshire FHS - I just have the £7 'magazine only' membership because I'm miles and miles from Bedfordshire so not able to go to meetings. I enjoy the magazine and it gives me an insight into my late father's birth county. I have had a few contacts from it and also written an article about my family and done some transcribing for them The other one is the East FHS - a one name society - for obvious reasons. Loads and loads of help came from that one when we first started out. Now I and my OH are going to put some work back into it. Anne
