Help needed getting birth certificate

Why not check the GRO ref and see which registration district he was registered in. This will give you two ways then to get his cert either local or GRO. Shirley |

Hi In the past when I have ordered a birth certificate I usually go direct to the local authority. I have a birth from 1890 where on one census it says he was born in South Shields (South Tyneside) and on the 1901 census it says he was born in Alnwick (Northumberland). If I ring the local authority will they tell me if he was born in their area or will I have to write in which will obviously take a lot longer. Thanks in advance, Penny |

I cant get my head around GRO. Thats why i just go direct to local council. whenever I have tried GRO i seem to go around in circles without ever getting the reference number. I realise I am doing something wrong, I just cant work out what it is!! Penny |

Penny you will still be able to order from the local office, but if you look him up on the index, you will know which local office to write to. You won't have to quote the GRO numbers. Jay |

Penny, I've been following your hunt and am glad you got a good outcome. You might (or not) find the following advice helpful. I have found GR very good for linking trees but for research and obtaining records I also use the site at www.ancestry.com They have links to all census records from 1841 and the all parish and probate records going back to the 16th century. They are something to do with the National Records office so have a link where you can order copies of Birth,Marriage or Death certificates after viewing the original entries on line Hope this helps Phil. |
