I'm thinking of buying some credits here, it says - 'credits available 7 days after purchase' - does this mean I have to wait 7 days before I can use them, or that they are only available for 7 days after date of purchase? Also, has anyone used this service and is it worth it? I'm just trying to decide which is the best paying records site to use. thanks Audrey in Canada

What are you after, census's, birth, deaths and marriages? Im sure if its census some nice person on here will help you, so you dont have to line the pockets of GR. The complete BMD's are also free to view on www(.)ancestry(.)co(.)uk you just have to register.

It means that your credits expire after 7 days. I agree with Willow, don't bother buying them, there are sites that offer the same BMD info for free!

it means they only last 7 days Its free to search on ancestry BMD Index and to register http://www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx Remove brackets

Don't buy any credits through GR.....all of the info is available elsewhere.....bmd's without charge. If you want census info, ask for lookups.............loads of GR members only too pleased to help. Reg

Thanks so much all of you, I have taken your adivce and found the free BMD site. I did find one person right away, only problem is, he comes up under a June 1883 heading and when I click on it, his birthday was actually March 1880, is this the norm? Also, the file and page umbers that are shown, is there a way to access these, as I want to find out his parents' names. thanks, Audrey in Canada

You can't see the certs without buying them.........they cost £7.00 Why not tell us the details of his name, birthplace etc, and see whether he can be traced in the 1891 census..........although, if you think he was born in 1880, you can find him on 1881, which is completely free on www.familysearch.org Are you 100% certain that the 1883 birth reg'n is the same person whose birth you say is 1880? Is it a very unusual name? I'm not certain what you mean by saying 'click on it'...... please can you clarify......... Reg

Thankyou for the info Claire. and Reg, I meant that when I click on his name that comes up in the 1883 listings, it takes me back to him again and shows his birthdate as March.1880. His name is not unusual : John Ponsford, b.March 1880. he married Mary Jane Sulley (my Husband's Grandmother) in December of 1903 in Cardiff, Wales. So I'm trying to go backwards from his name and find more ancestors. I've managed to get Mary Jane's parents and siblings. Thanks, Audrey

Do you have the marriage certificate for John and Mary Jane? That will tell you his age and his father's name, which will help to locate him in previous census. Gwyn

I still don't understand what you say happens.......... This birth reg'n is on the transcribed part of Ancestry.......is it the one to which you refer? Name: John Ponsford Year of Registration: 1883 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Cardiff (1837-1974) County: Glamorgan, Monmouthshire Volume: 11a Page: 315 There is no John Ponsford born 1880 on the Wales censuses........ There is one born 1880 on 1901 England.......born in Clerkenwell. Reg

Audrey, I'm also in Canada. I buy all my certificates on line from GRO ...... it costs £7, and they arrive usually within a week. Find the information on bmd (either ancestry or freebmd), take down all the info including the volume and page no. Go to the GRO web site, and apply for certificate. They send you a photocopy of the original entry in the register.

Thankyou Reg, that's the one. I . still learning how to work on this so appreciate everyone's help. I know that I could send for certificates but due to living on a small pension I was told it would be a lot cheaper if I wait until I go over home and go to the GRO myself, hope this is true lol... My kids bought me an airline ticket for my birthday so I can't wait to go. again thankyou all, Audrey
