Have been struggling for a long time to find the marriage of Herbert Alexander Mathieson and Janet Elizabeth Mustart sometime between 1888 and 1896 (first child born 1893). They were both also known by their second names. It's a brick wall that I desperately want to knock down!! Thanks, Chris

Chrispy - take it no joy on freebmd? and you have tried the full bmd index? Suggest you do the pay to view familyrelatives.org - you can name search for the period 1866-1920. What are the details for the 1901 census for them? Are you sure it wasnt a second marriage for Janet Elizabeth ? Are you sure they married? Do you have the birth certificate of the children - especially the first giving Janets name? Im a bit confused here Chrispy, can you give us their 1901 details please as Im wondering if Mustart may have been your Janets married name for a previous marriage.

Sorry so long in coming back Heather. (At work!!!!). You could be right about it being a 2nd marriage, but don't know. They had 2 children. Donald Mathieson born 1893 (father Herbert Alexander Mathieson, mother Janette Elizabeth Mustart) and Sidney Mathieson born 1896 (father Alexander Herbert and mother Elizabeth Janet Mustart). Have trawled through the BMDs for about 8 years either side of kids' births. In 1901 there is no trace. Donald was living with his paternal grandmother, but no sign of Herbert, Janet or other son Sidney. Chris

Janette now? Chrispy, both names sound very Scottish - have you checked for a Scotland marriage?

Thanks for your input Carol, but already know the census and birth stuff. Heather, Herbert was born in London (father came down to London- opened a chemists in the Balls Pond Road!!). I am lucky enough to have some family letters that confirm a lot of history including the birth of Herbert, but no luck about his marriage or death. I have found a birth of Janet Elizabeth Mustart in Mile End round about the right time which would fit in, but can't be sure really until I know father's name. Oh well....

Mike, sorry to be a bore, but have seen that one. The actual marriage is typed in as Alexander Mathieson Mustard and there are only 4 on the page. Do you think it could be an error in the index? perhaps I should chance it and send for that one?! Also I have searched under Mustard as it could easily be mistranscribed. many thanks, Chris

Carol, do you think I would be justified in assuming that the birth record of Elizabeth Janet is the right one? I can't convince myself that I should make that assumption without other evidence. Chris

Could just be a councidence the Mathieson Mustard (Mustart) connection. it well may be mistranscribed. Might be worth spending £7 just to find out one way or the other. Anyway good luck. Regards Mike

There is a marriage between Jane Elizabeth Mustart and Daniel Thomas 1893, Romford. Ref 4a 488. What's the story between Herbert and Janet? Are you sure they married at all? It's possible that they simply lived together.

Have a go at familyrelatives.org - name search for the period. If Janet(tte) was born in London then you have a narrow period/area to look for. Good luck! Such unusual name, it should be easy, shouldnt it!

Deborah, can't be sure they married, but Janet Elizabeth is called 'Mathieson' on both children's b certs. Heather is family relatives expensive? Are their records more complete?
