You won't find it easy to trace Irish ancestors, and there won't be much on Ancestry. Put 'Irish' in the search box to find threads giving tips about Irish research. For Scottish ancestors you need to buy credits for Scotland's People website. Kath. x

My granda was born in 1919 in Belfast, N.Ireland and died in December 2005. His name was William Shaw. My nan was born in 1922 in Belfast, maiden name Armstrong. First names - Elizabeth Lilian. I think great-grandparents on one or both sides came from Scotland.

Where and what years were the people you are looking for born? Kath. x

I know their years of birth, grandmothers maiden name, and roughly when they married. My grandfather died last year. Can records be sourced for free online?

If you mean the records on GR then they are just the England/Wales bmd records and England/Wales census. You are best not buying credits from GR anyway as the birth, marriage and death records they have can be sourced elsewhere for free. To research your tree you need to work back from a proven fact (for instance your own birth backwards). As your tree grows you may find that your ancestors came from much further afield than you imagine. Do you know roughly where/when your grandparents were born? Or roughly where/when they married/died?

I must be doing something wrong. The limited number of people (all still living apart from my grandad) on my tree are not on any records. So apart from not being able to even find them I don't know how to begin finding ancestors. Any simple ideas/help? Is this site just for those living in England and Wales? AJ
