how to choose a family tree maker???

Hi Lucille, There are lots of family tree software programs available free, as downloads, on the internet. Some are the full version, some will be just a trial version, but either way, you will be able to try them out. I found this was the best way to decide. Try a few out, and then, if necessary, pay for the 'full' version. I would recommend Legacy (available as a full version, free download, to anyone) it's a brilliant piece of software. The free download is perfectly adequate, but I paid for the Deluxe version. The LDS also do a full version, free on their website, too. Debbie

I wouldnt recommend GR tree maker - it is pretty primitive and I long since stopped using it. You do need to have your tree on a disc - any internet site can fail without notice. FTM is excellent, I have the cheapy version and it suits me fine so far, or you could download a free tree programme from the LDS site. For a tree on the internet you cannot beat Tribal Pages - free, user friendly and very easy to fiddle about with. It copes painlessly with cousin marriages etc (GR tree doesnt cope with cousin marriages AT ALL). OC

I use FTM2005 and find it does all I want it to, and it is easy to add information to. There is room for just about anything you want to add (although I must admit I don't use it to it's full potential). Kath. x

I was born in Australia but my family came from UK in 1950. I have my tree going back to late 1700's on my fathers side in the Netherlands before they came to England. The other branches go back to th 1800's in the UK so far. I have one aunt who went to America in about 1940. I have been advised to buy a family tree maker..... which one???? some sell for a few $ some go up to $100 or so.. a few come with 'free' subscriptions. some with cds or discs (which Im not sure what they contain?) They have Aust/NZ versions, UK versions etc....does it matter? Should I get one from the UK or Aust???? I;ve bought credits from various sites but not found entirely useful, as they either run out or I waste them on searches that yield no results... I've been doing this on and off for over a year and have 150 relations in my tree...its getting a little complicated and I think my tree is getting a bit messy with the same name being duplicated with all the intertwining marriages within relatives! by the way...THANK YOU to ALL the kind & wonderful people who have answered me before...Heather, Victor, Sarah, Stan ... to name just a few ...so many....I've saved all yr msgs for future reference. THANX!!
