Thank you, Kath. Sorry for the delay in answering. That helps actually. I don't always know the areas surrounding the town of birth and the registration area gives a clue. Thanks again. Susan

Rose, thank you for that. Richard, I didn't know that Shelf was in the Halifax reg. district. Are Birstall, Ardsley and Gildersome in the same district? Thank you also for finding that for me, I will send for that certificate. Susan

The birth cert of one of the children would give you Caroline's maiden name, which might then lead you to her marriage to Charles and to find them in 1871. This ref looks like daughter Harriet (Shelf is in Halifax reg district): Name: Harriet Matilda Johnson Year of Registration: 1876 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Halifax Volume: 9a Page: 584 Richard

I have my 2 x great grandfather on the 1881 Census and the 1891 Census. He has lost his wife between 1881 and 1891 and remarried. I cannot find him on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census returns. He died before the 1901 Census. His name was Charles Johnson born Birstall, West Yorkshire about 1850. In 1881 he is married to Caroline and in 1891 he is married to Hannah. There is a Charles born Dewsbury but this isn't him as I can follow him through each census return. I can't find Caroline's death but have found Charles' remarriage. I would appreciate any help as this is driving me crazy! Susan
