My 4xg grandmother Ann Elizabeth Saunders b.1817 Finchingfield Essex. Can't find her on either the 1851 census or 1861. I'm fairly sure the 1851 census for her area Great Bardfield is missing which would explain that. But the family moved to West Ham in 1856. All her children are there living in a house on their own, but she isn't there. Is it possible she was just out and missed the census man? If anyone could help find her would appreciate it.

Hi Richard I cannot find my ancestor Henry Stock on the 1861 census. He was born in Finchingfield, and i found him on 1851 but not 1861 census. I also have a suspicion the Finchingfield census returns for 1861 are missing but need someone to confirm that. Ben

There's an Ann E. Sanders on the 61 census, born 1818, Finchingfield, Essex. She's a servant, a monthly nurse, in the home of Mr. Barsham, a soliciter in West Ham, Essex. Margaret

The assumption is always that the spellings of names, places of birth and years are going to match through the census. They don't always, look for mistranscriptions/misspellings etc. Some census returns are missing, damaged or lost being the main reasons but the mistranscriptions are the most likely. Glen

Thank you Sheila and Margaret, I'm fairly certain that is her, she musthave been at work when the census was taken as I doubt her children would have been living alone, and the two adresses are round the corner from each other. Much appreciated.

http://www.btinternet*com/~roger.beckwith/Finchingfield/genealogy.htm Ben, not sure if your already aware of it, but the website adress above has a genealogy section for those with ancestors from Finchingfield. The Ann Saunders I have been searching for here, her maiden name was Hitching, and using that site I was lucky enough to get in contact with a relation from that area that had traced the entire family back to the early 1600's, and very thoroughly so too! So would definently suggest having a look and maybe even posting there. All best Richard

Hi Richard Thanks for the suggestion. I will be able to add my relations details to the site then and hopefully come up with a contact. Ben

Some of my ancestors in London are missing from 1861 census. I know everything about them but it would of been nice to see the family in 1861 as an elderly aunt of my ggg grandfather might of been living with them which would help greatly in finding his parents baptism. They estimate that about 5 to 10% of 1861 is missing, so that accounts for roughly 1 million people. I do wonder if the lost pages are stashed away undiscovered in the vaults of some London office building somehwere? Ben
