I have been searching the Free BMD Death Index on Ancestry and have come across three 'illegible' entries under likely candidates for my Ann Dawson (died abt 1938 probably in Norfolk) On checking the Images I have deciphered the hoped for district as Walsingham. The vol and page numbers are incomplete but the one I have identified has in the District column of the index the words 'Illegible - Pt 5 - Candidates for Correction'. Could someone please tell me what that means. Many thanks. Jo

It's reasonably clear on findmypast......... Walsingham 23/244 BUT.........Walsingham is 13, not 23, so something is not right............ Erik

It looks clear on the complete index. Ann Dawson June qtr. 1838, Walsingham, XXIII, 244 Perhaps whoever wrote it put an extra X by mistake!! Kath. x

That's what I thought, and the original doesn't appear that difficult to read. I think the transcriber was still suffering from a good night out! Has anyone worked out what the 'Pt 5 - Candidates for Correction' means on the Index list? Jo

That doesn't show up on the complete index. Perhaps it's something to do with the wrong volume number being there. Kath. x

Really don't know what it means, except that whoever was doing the transcribing couldn't work out what the image said. Kath. x

Thanks all, As long as it's not a slur on what could be my gt.gt.grandmother and suggesting she was a candidate for correction!! lol I'll see if the local records office can help me sort out the number required for a certificate. Good night Jo
