I'm stuck !!!! Have found a relative called Wellard Jenkinson (1839). Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, South Yorkshire In the 1841 census his name is Wellard Justice!!!! and he was living with a Mr & Mrs Chapman, Elizabeth Jenkinson and what looks like two other brothers (Justice's). Sometime between 1841 and 1851 he changed his name to Jenkinson. Cant find any birth record for either name so does anyone know how I find his parents or why he changed his name, whether he was adopted etc???? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks |

William Jenkinson married Elizabeth Justice in the Rotherham Reg District in the 2nd Quarter of 1840. William and Elizabeth are the parents as named in the 1851 census. (Btw, there is also a William Jenkinson of about the right age listed as being in the Wakefield House of Correction on the 1841 census. This could explain why he doesn't appear with his wife and kids although it's maybe just me being fanciful after a glass of wine.....LOL) The other 2 Justice boys are probably Elizabeth's brothers. There are also some other Jenkinsons on the same page (top) in the village in 1841 who are possibly the family of William. Jack |

Im starting this again as Im getting confused. Are you going backwards? So does this boy stay as a Jenkinson or change again to Justice on his marriage? In mho, if Elizabeth was his mum - a Justice - who married Mr Jenkinson, then you need to be looking for Wellards dad who must have died between his conception and the remarriage of Elizabeth (assuming of course that they were married!). ( I see Jack says the 2 other kids may be Elizabeths bros, but I would have thought more likely the kids of Mr Justice brought along when she married him). Have you tried the IGI? There is a chance that Chapman MAY be Elizabeths maiden name. Im off to watch Corrie, cant get my head round this at the mo - sorry! |

Elizabeth Justice has a baby called Wellard /Willard who does not appear to have been registered. In 1840, Elizabeth Justice marries William Jenkinson. In 1841, she appears on the census in her married name but her husband is not there for whatever reason (in prison or somewhere else). With her, she has Wellard (still using her maiden name of Justice as he was born out of wedlock) and 2 other children called Justice who are too old to be hers and therefore are probably her brothers. In 1851, William Jenkinson has reappeared in the marital home,so is listed with Elizabeth Jenkinson (nee Justice) and Wellard/Willard who is now using the name Jenkinson, either because he was actually the son of William in the first place, despite his birth being before the marriage in 1840 or because William has accepted him as his son. Hope that's clearer. Jack |
