c1876 English birth question

My grt grandparents never married though they lived together and had at least nine children. Both the father and mother signed on all birth certs. One of the kids was born in England, said to be Newcastle. Would the birth be registered under the fathers name (Cunningham) or the mothers maiden name (Hutton)? Thanks Mhairi |

Mhairi, if they both went to register the birth together and admitted that they were not married, then it should be indexed under both surnames. If they pretended they were married then it would only be under the father's surname. If only the mother went to register the birth, and she admitted she was not married, it should be under her surname. Basically, you should try looking under both. |
