I wonder if anyone could give me some tips on trying to locate this relative anywhere. I've found him in the BMD indexes 1882 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: West Derby County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 560 I know from his marriage certificate (April 11th 1914 to Florence Lang, Islington, London) that his fathers name is Joseph Lloyd (deceased) but I cannot find Lawrence in any of the censuses! Any general tips on searching a common surname would also be hugely appreciated. Kind regards Karen

Would suggest that the way forward would be to order his birth certificate. Once you have mother´s name as well it will be easier to trace parents in census, as well as their marriage.

Without the birth cert, you can't be 100% certain about his father's name..........'deceased' was often a face-saver for illegitimacy. Reg

If you are sure thats his birth cert you will need to buy it to go further back. It may be that dad died before the 1891 census in which case Lawrence may be shown under a new fathers name in the 1891? West Derby covers Liverpool, so a large area to look through. Lawrence is an unusual name - but he may have been using another if he didnt like it! If he married in Islington - have you checked out where the wife was living before the marriage and where he may possibly have been living to meet her? Whats his occupation? Lloyd is a welsh name - take it you checked the census for Wales?

Thanks so much for tips - I'd not considered (or knew) that deceased on a certificate could be something else. The name is Welsh - and indeed he was a miner in Wales - on the marriage certificate his address is Wales but still can't find in the Welsh censuses either! Ordering birth certificate seems to be the way to go - thanks for help! Kind regards

Thanks so much for all your help. I actually rang a living relative in Wales in the end and after a bit of explaining managed to find out he had been bought up in Canada! Thus explaining why he can't be found in the censuses. So I'm going to have to try and navigate those now. She believes his parents died early and he was bought up by monks or nuns in Winnepeg....the search continues!! Many thanks karen
