I want to know if Ernest is Henry's father. I couldn't find him on the census, only on Henry's wedding certificate. Karen |

You can only try and confirm who the father is by either ordering the birth cert or finding a baptism entry. Glen |

This doesn't sound like a brick wall just yet. Can you please confirm which marriage or birth cert you have so far and what it says on it. The fact you cant find a census entry at this stage is a bit premature. Most 'missing' census entries are down to transciption errors in the index. |

There are no Henry Stanton with father named Ernest in or born Islington on the 1871 or 1881 census Roy |

1863 is only about 60% complete on freebmd. You will need to use the full index via Ancestry for the birth ref. Have you found Henry on the census? Any baptism entries? You still need to find the birth cert or baptism to confirm parentage but i did find this one. IGI Extracted record. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HENRY STANTON Male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: 11 NOV 1863 Christening: 03 DEC 1863 Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Mother: HARRIETT STANTON Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. BUT it doesn't mean it is your Henry. What certs have you got? |

I've tried ordering Henry's birth cert, but I was sent wrong one. His birth date was 11/11/1863 baptism 03.12.1863. He may have used his second name Edward... which is why I can't find him and his parents on earlier censuses. |

Presumably the cert matches the baptism i quoted above. How do you know the cert is the wrong one or the baptism is the right one? |

there is no birth entry for a Henry Edward David Stanton in last qarter of 1863 or the first quarter of 1864 and only one entry for a Henry Stanton born in that part of the country at that time Roy |

I have Henry's son's birth cert 25/2/1888 131 Georges Rd, Islington. Father Henry Edward David Stanton (iron bedstead maker). Wife Rose Stanton nee Robson. I too found that baptism ref at Family Records. I tied it to my Henry as I thought the dates matched. I could find Henry and Rose's wedding cert when I went to the Records Centre (I was mistaken earlier - I've just checked my certs). |

The marriage cert you have might not have the fathers dateails entered correctly because he may not know who his father was. The same with his age, it might be a year or two out on the cert. If the baptism i found is the right one then he may be illegitimate as most will have a fathers' name quoted. In the 1871 there appears to be one Henry with a mother called Harriet, the birth is outside London and the year quoted is 1861. |

Yes that is the correct 1901 census. So if Henry was illegitimate .. does this mean I have hit a brick wall? |

What makes you discount the birth cert you have. The date of birth? The fact that the fathers name is different to the marriage cert? |

Thanks Ozibird...This is where I found out Henry was known by his middle name Edward - which was common in this line. |
