Hang fire though, these freebie programmes don't have all the features enabled. Known as 'starter' editions they have several locked features. You should be able to import the gedcom and open it, but if you add any notes or additional names. dates etc then you won't be able to export the file as a gedcom. The option of exporting the file is one of the disabled functions in a 'starter' edition. You would have to either upgrade your starter edition (for a price...) or buy a full working version. The full working version is the cheaper option of the two.

Thanks for the help offered and sorry for the delay but the week end got in the way, and yesterday a man was digging a hole in the road - so no electricity all day! Pat.

And Id recommend you up grade it to a full program because it will be only a partial one which will not have all the facilities. S and N Genealogy have a 2006 version for £12 with a months free ancestry - bargain.

I have a full programme Family Tree Maker 2006 SE disc which came free with a magazine which I have never used. If I install this will that be OK? Pat.

Hi Pat, yes if you install the programme, then you can import the file into it and see the information contained. I suspect that if it came free with a magazine that some of the features will be disabled, but it will suffice to view and amend the details. Good luck Keith

Hi Pat, what are you trying to open the Gedcom file with? Have you an offline tree programme to use? Without one you will not be able to read the file. If you do not have one, you can download a free one (never used it myself) from the LDS site call Personnel Ancestry File. I personnaly use Family Tree Maker, you can purchase a basic version of this for about £6 at some supermarkets. If you have an offline programme and still cannot open it, try downloading from GR again.

I have just imported my family tree from GR but cannot open it. Have tried everything I can think of but it will not open for me. Any suggestions please. Pat. Thank you for the help given, sorry for the delay, but the week end got in the way, plus no electricity yesterday because a man was digging a hole in the road.! Pat.
