Denis Reluctant as I am to give this thread any prominence, I have to shout HEAR HEAR! to you! The 1911 census already has a definite date for release and is therefore outside the scope of the FOI act. As you so rightly pointed out, the 1931 does not exist, as anyone would know, had they taken the trouble to google it and acquaint themselves with the facts, instead of jumping on a bandwagon with no wheels. I can only hope that the signatories to this petition do their family history research in a more thorough manner than they have researched THIS matter - but I doubt it somehow. OC

Terence If I thought for one moment that the Government has the technology to magic up the 1931 English Census, destroyed by the Luftwaffe during WW2, then I would sign up in a flash. However, as it doesn't then I won't lend my name to this total nonsense. Petitions are fine in theory but tend to be taken more seriously when the petitioners demonstrate that they have a grasp of the subject under discussion. Perhaps the only hope is to get some public figures to sign up to give the petition appropriate gravitas. Some of the departees from the Big Brother House perhaps? Denis

Hi - I would love to sign, went in to do so but you must be a British resident to do so. Sorry, live in Australia. Leigh

Downing Street is offering a petition for people to sign, which would reduce the census release period from 100 years to 70 years, thus making the1911,1921 and 1931 censuses available immediately.
