Can anyone tell me if this site is any good? I need records from Ireland will it help me or would I be throwing money away? I am also concerned because I have seen that once they have your credit card details they just take money to renew subs is that true?

Ancestry is a very good site, and most people on here will tell you that they wouldn't have got half as far without it. However, if you are looking for Irish information, then I don't think you will find much on Ancestry. I'm afraid I know nothing about finding Irish records, so wouldn't know what to advise you to use. Kath. x

I have found Ancestry invaluable in my search. You can create a free account where you don't have to pay and can access BMD original Indexes Images and i think at the moment the 1881 census is free. I don't know about accessing Irish records, I never have had to look. Ireland i believe you have to contact the Gro.Gov there to access records because (I think) there is no access to Irish records online, there is a thread on this somewhere, I'll try and find it and nudge it up for you. If you have people in the UK other than Ireland, then I cant see how anyone can research from home without ancestry. It is the best £70 for a year you could spend in this hobby.
