Adoption before 1927 were often carried out privately by Parish Officers - there are no indexes open to the public - most Parish records are now in county record offices.. Up to 1970s Adoption could still be arranged by an Adoption Society, Local Authority or by private agreement using the services of a Doctor, Solicitor, friend or Mother. Some children were Adopted by their Grandparents or other relatives, or by step parents. Indexes to Adoptions by court order in England and Wales since 1 January 1927 are accessible to the public only at the Family Records Centre in London. You can request an index search of the Adopted children Register at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions by phone or by sending your application to the Adoptions section of the General Register Office in Southport, There is a fee payable for this service. To March 1959, a full Adoption certificate will disclose The childs date of birth Adoptive names Sex The names and address of the Adoptive Parents The Adoptive Fathers occupation The date of the Adoption order and the identity of the court making it The date of entry in the Adopted Childrens Register. Hope this helps Kind regards Stella X
