IGI - International Genealogical Index This is an index, accessible on www.familysearch.org of baptism and marriage entries extracted from parish registers and/or bishop's transcripts by members of the Church of Latter Day Saints (mormons)There are many aras of the country not covered, other parishes are only partially indexed and it also includes many submitted entries which may or may not be accurate

Thank you for your assistance Judith & Heather. I will search the Parish records like you advise. What does IGI stand for? Sorry, but I am new to all this! Thanks.

As Judith has noted, it is a bit unusual to have traced an ancestor back to 1717 without you having already consulted parish records. If you have found this info on IGI or anywhere else, you do need to verify it working backwards from known facts.

Parish records would definitley help - the registers may if you are lucky give extra details such as date of birth, occupation, whether the person concerned was of this parish or name the parish/hamlet where they lived, even rude comments about the family by an indiscreet vicar. Other parish documents may include settlement documents, bastardy records etc which can give clues to whether your ancestors moved from parish to parish. Not only would they help, but if you have got this far back without them it is a must to check them now to make sure the informants or transcripts you have accessed were correct

I have been lucky enough to trace an Ancestor back to 1717. What is the best source to get more information? Would Parrish records help? I am rather stuck! Thanks for your attention and good luck with your searches. Lynne (prefer it to Madeleine!)
