Hello all My ancestor is ANDREW PEAGAN who joined the 1/21st Royal British Fusiliers in Ireland in 1827 at age 18. His army papers say he was born Kilmannon near Maryborough, Queens County ca 1809. The Regiment served in Ireland until 1832 when it came to Australia with Andrew & his wife MARGARET DELANEY & FIRSTBORN SON JAMES. Andrew (Pagan) & Margaret were married at St. Canice's in Kilkenny on 6 july 1831 and James was born ca 1832 somewhere in Ireland? probably Kilkenny. In 1850 Andrew was sending money to an Anne? Beatrice? or Bettrion? or Beakins? at Clonaslee, Buttis, Queens Co Ireland. In Australia, the name Peagan was misspelt to Pagin, Phagan, Phegin and ultimately Phegan which it remains today. What was it originally? I understand that there is a surname possibly Peakans or Deakans in a townland called Ballykineen mid 1820s to 1830s. Can anyone help re finding Andrew's birthplace - name or anything? Also anything re the Delaneys in Kilkenny related to Margaret James' birth record? Any help much appreciated. Kind regards Mary Ryan (nee Phegan) |
