Hi. Phil, Thanks for the offer, but I have them on all the census, just wanted the birth certificate to tie up the loose ends and to make sure I have him correctly and confirm I have the right father for him. There are too many Johns in this family!!! Thanks again, Audrey

Hi Audrey Many people did not bother registering a birth. That is why an act of parliament in 1875 made it punishable not to.

Hi, There are a fair few John Shrosbree's in the London census': 1841 Aged 7 living at 8 Grafton Court, Marylebone, Middlesex Aged 25 living at Devonshire Street, Shoreditch, Middlesex There's 3 more in the 1851 London census, 2 born in Shoreditch. One aged 30, the other aged 1. Could any of these be related, if so I can look further. Cheers Phil

Yes Jim, that is what I was looking at but where the surname should be there was a line i.e. no surname, I was querying whether anyone thought the line meant they couldnt read the surname as usually the surname is listed each time... Audrey

Hi Audrey, Free BMD gives a John Charles Shrosbree born March quarter 1849, Islington, volume 3, page 288, but of course it is ten years out. Islington, greater London. Elizabeth

Can anyone give me some advice please? I have been searching for the birth of a John Charles Shrosbree born 1838 Middlesex. IGI has his baptism listed as Sept. 1838. I have searched the Ancestry Full index from 1837 to 1839 and can find no Shrosbree listed. There is however a John Charles listed on July/Aug/Sept quarter of 1838, pag. 23 of 70. but there is a line through where the surname should be. It is listed as Uxbridge, which is in Middlesex and the right area. Does the line mean they were unable to read the surname, or does it mean it is the same surname as the one above.? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!! Audrey
