Jeanette They are SUPPOSED to ask you for an exact date for a birth and /or death in the last 50 years - but they don't always do that. This is how people manage to create false identities.... OC

Perhaps it applies only to birth certs..........to reduce the risk of identity theft........ Reg

If an event took place in the last 50 years, I feel sure that the GRO will ask for the actual date.........for security purposes. Reg

Thank-you. I'm acompletely new to this. The marriage is between Mary Anderson and Lawrence James in June 1963. It gives a ref on the records through this site as District: Sheffield 2D 260

Sharon, that is the GRO ref that you have. Sheffield is the district, 2D is the volume no and 260 is the page no. You just need to add which quarter of the year it took place, which if it is June, will be Q2. Sam x

what year are you talking about - have you looked on FreeBMD - if you want to put the details here I am sure someone can help you find the reference. Irene

Thanks but how do I get the GRO ref?

Irene

Irene Report 16 Jan 2007 15:23

Most of us do not know the dates of a marriage that is why we order the certificate. The marriage is usually registered in 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th quarter of the year and that info is enough to get the certificate. Good luck Irene

its best to get GRO ref then you wont need exact date and order through GRO web site they cost £7 with ref http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Hi, I've gone to central records to try to order a marriage certificate. I know the month & year but not the actual date. Is there a way I can still order the certificate?
